André Villas-Boas, president of FC Porto, spoke about the possibility of Sérgio Conceição heading to Sporting to succeed Rui Borges. It should be noted that the Sporting president kept Rui Borges, guaranteeing that his place was never in question.
“The choice will be up to him himself. Sérgio Conceição is an excellent coach, a historic figure at FC Porto, with a brilliant career at the club, he gave us endless titles, he has a memory that we will preserve forever, he is honourable and dignified, and the club's choice is solely up to him,” he said, in statements to journalists, upon arrival at the 'Portugal Football Globes', taking stock of FC Porto's start to the season: “A brilliant start, a fully committed team, a lot of FC Porto about it, a lot of dedication. A team that remains from one year to the next, from a successful year most of the squad remains, and it is an added value that has translated into the continuity of the coach's work, combining the Porto spirit, which is unique and has allowed us to achieve seven wins in seven matchdays. Feet firmly on the ground, very happy.”
André Villas-Boas also addressed the participation in the UEFA Champions League. “Difficult. We have stability. It is difficult to compete with big clubs. Against Manchester City it was complicated for us. Now come matches in which FC Porto has its own ambitions, starting with Seville and then Naples and PSV. We have the responsibility to defend FC Porto. Mandatory to get through the league phase? No, but it is something we would like to happen. It is a unique and historic opportunity for Portuguese football to add points in the ranking and establish the sixth position.”
André Villas-Boas downplayed the lead at the top of the league: “There are many matchdays left, a very long calendar, and we have to avoid injuries, which can create noise in the title race. We want to better control injury prevention. The squad is good, the coach is very good and, if we can renew the title, it would be an even greater pride.”
