Frederico Varandas was at the Portugal Football Summit, where he was one of the speakers on a panel, one on one, with Pedro Pinto. On the occasion, the Sporting leader addressed various topics about the mandates he has fulfilled at the Lions. Asked about what will be one of the major objectives to fulfil, the president did not even speak about sporting matters.
'What would I like in this mandate, after everything we have already done… I would like to be able to complete the project, which is a very demanding project for our teams, that is, to finish the stadium. When I talk about the stadium, I am talking about Alvalade XXI, I am talking about everything that is still missing in terms of video screens, the sound, the dressing rooms, the members' social area, the VIP hall… it will not be the biggest stadium in Portugal in 2030, but it will surely be the best stadium of 2030. We had an opportunity to build a new stadium in 2004, I remember perfectly. And the truth is that nobody at Sporting, nobody liked that stadium. From the tiles, from the moat, the colour of the seats. It seemed deliberate, everything that could be bad was there. And [laughs] maybe it was not done by a Sporting fan. I would very much like to have that work completed still in 2030,' wished the Sporting official, asked afterwards about the opportunities a club like Sporting will have in the future.
'Sporting is part of the Portuguese economy and we can only fight where we are fighting today. We have only two paths: the Champions League and developing players, selling players, buying players and selling those players. This is the only real way for a model that exists today in Portugal, for an associationism model, for a model in which Sporting is owned by Sporting's members and with which we identify. I grew up with the Champions League being occupied by two clubs and then, occasionally, Sporting would go there. And the truth is that in this, even in this tighter cycle, Sporting achieved the objectives, we were always in the Champions League and our rivals took turns watching Sporting. It is the only way for Sporting to continue growing, it is to be competitive,' he concluded.
